SDL2.dll: download the file and fix the error
SDL2.dll is a library shipped with the games that use it (video, sound or game engine). Its official description: “SDL”.
If it is missing or damaged, Windows displays for example: “The program can't start because SDL2.dll is missing from your computer.” Two methods can fix the error, below.
Method 1 · quick · about 1 minute
Download only SDL2.dll
Ideal if only this file is reported missing: you replace a single file, without reinstalling anything.
- Version
- 2, 0, 8, 0
- Architecture
- 32-bit (x86)
- Size
- 1.05 MB
Then:
- Extract SDL2.dll from the zip file and copy it to the folder of the program showing the error (where its
.exefile is). - Still getting the error? Copy it to
C:\Windows\SysWOW64(64-bit Windows) orC:\Windows\System32(32-bit Windows), then restart.

Repair or reinstall the game
This file is not provided by Windows but by the game itself, in the version it expects. Repairing or reinstalling the game puts it back in place.
- Steam: right-click the game › Properties › Installed Files › Verify integrity of game files. Other platforms (Epic, GOG, EA…): use the game’s “Verify” or “Repair” function.
- Otherwise, uninstall and reinstall the game, and check whether your antivirus has quarantined the file.
